Justice Ministry Seeks Review Of Jailed 13
The Justice Ministry has written to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court requesting that it review the case of 13 Boeng Kak women recently jailed for demonstrations against a CPP senator’s real estate project, a ministry official said yesterday. Bunyai Narin, deputy Cabinet chief for the Justice Ministry, said the letter was sent to the court last week. “The ministry sent the request since last week to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to review this case,” he said. The ministry also sent a letter to Boeng Kak residents letting them know that it had asked the Municipal Court to consider their request for the women’s release. That letter, a copy of which was obtained yesterday, is dated May 31 and signed by Secretary of State Long Phalon. “I would like to keep you informed that the Ministry of Justice has sent the request to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and prosecutor after receiving the letter from sir and madam, who are representatives for Boeng Kak, to review his and her suggestion in accordance with competent laws with transparency and justice,” it reads. …
